My training

All my training time I spent in Vilniaus arkivyskupijos caritas (VAC) children’s and teenager’s day centre ‘‘Hope angel’’. It is nongovernmental organization which purpose is to help children from risk group’s families to get social and financial help and also improve their mutual relationships.
My training purpose was to know about institution’s, where I did my training, politic and help, support giving methods. Also I wanted to know how social worker works, how she establishes her clients problems, how this help process is going from beginning to the end. Moreover, I wanted to improve my communication skills and be able to collaborate with other institutions.
In the beginning of my training I foresaw some tasks in order to reach my purpose. I made acquaintance with VAC day centre’s documents and realization of their help projects. I got a lot of information about social worker’s job and almost all my training time I was working there as a real social worker. I went to schools and talked with teachers about girls with whom I was working. It was very frightening because I have to go there alone and without any experience of communicating with teachers, talk about such questions. However, I went to these girls home. To one girl I went alone and it also was very unpleasant and terrifying because I did not know what to expect there. But my visit was successful and I had no problems. I successfully entered to relations with this family. To other girl’s home I went with social worker because it would be too dangerous for me to go there alone. In spite of that, our visit also was successful.
To improve my communication skills I spent a lot of time with children. I was playing and doing homework with them. In addition to this, I worked very intensive with one girl who had some problems with communication, behaviour and learning. Moreover, there were some problems in her family. So, I spent a lot of time with her, went to her home, communicated with her family and tired to establish her problems. After that, I did an individual help plan which should help other social workers to work with her.
Al things considered, I got very useful experience and a lot of information about social work through my training. I think, all my tasks and purpose were reached. Now I have real understanding about this profession and it is really hard and very important job for everyone of us especially for risk group’s families.

Suicides

Suicide - is an act of intentionally ending one’s own life. Nowadays there are a lot of suicides and, how it would be sad, most of them are committed in Lithuania.
All of us sometimes are thinking why people commit suicides but there is not jus one answer to this question. People commit suicides because they can not stop the pain, they can not think clearly, make decisions, get out of depression, they can not see the possibility of change, get someone’s attention or can not see to get control.
If we want to reduce numbers of committing suicides we have to notice warning signs of it. And they are ideation, substance abuse, purposelessness, anxiety, being trapped, hopelessness, withdrawal, anger, recklessness and mood change. Moreover, if our society learns and notices these warning signs I think really less suicide will be committed. Also, people have to show interest and support for those persons, be non-judgmental and do not lecture on the value of life. In addition to this, they also should not ask why a person tried to commit a suicide but offer empathy and do not dare to do this and course take actions.
And what is the most important thing it is to talk with someone because these persons are not alone with their problems. There are community mental health agencies, school counsellors or psychologists. Also, private therapists, family physicians and religious leaders who will help at any time they will be needed.
To sum up everything, suicides are a very big and serious problem in the entire world and especially in county. And we as future social workers should try to stop these massive terrible actions and raise awareness of our society about this huge and really horrible problem.

Arachnophobia

When people today hear the word, "Arachnophobia", they think of a preposterous Hollywood movie, but arachnophobia is a very real, serious problem for many people and also for me. It can become an obsession, affecting their everyday lives in unimaginable ways. There are historical and cultural reasons for arachnophobia’s beginning.
In most of Europe during Middle Ages spiders were considered a source of evil. Any food or other things which come into contact with spiders were considered as infected. Spiders were believed to be messengers of the Black Plague and death. Europeans believed that spiders were poisonous and their bites caused many diseases. However, most of Europeans diseases were caused by completely different sources than spiders. The reasons of it were rats which carried the plague. Furthermore, non-European cultures believed that spiders were symbols of good luck or wisdom.
In addition to this, there is a traditional medical treatment of arachnophobia and it is called “systematic desensitization”. A person who has arachnophobia writes down the list of the situations with spiders from least frightening to most frightening. After that, he learns relaxation techniques which help him to deal with these situations from the list’s bottom to it’s top. Next step is to move on real situations accompanied by therapist. When a person is able to hold a live spider without fear he has overcome his phobia. Course, there are more treatments for arachnophobia, because our technology is going up every day.
To sum up everything, arachnophobia is one of a lot of phobias and nowadays it is curable and not so frightening than in the past. So, many people who have this phobia can take a breath easily and have a hope to get it off.

My listening theme was very interesting and funny and listening level was quite intermedia, so i did not have much difficulties with understanding. Moreover, i was surprised that it was quite easy to understand because the rate of speaking was quite slow and i could managed to understand about what there was talking. Course, there were a lot of unknown words so i have to look up for the meaning in a dictionary and listen to it one more time. So, i listened it twice and red a transcript and understood it very well.

Actually, my listening skils are not good, openly, they are quite bad especially when i have to listen to native speakers because their speaking rate is too quick for me.

In order to improve my listening skils i think i should listen more podcasts, specially, more authentic cassette recordings, whatch English films and maybe to go abroad, because then i think my listening skils and speaking,as well, will become perfect.

Virginia Tech: "As strong a place as it has always been"

A tragedy of Virginia shocked all the world. It is inscrutable how a person can kill 32 people...
Government of Virginia's university was very irresponsible because they should have warn students about shooting in hostel. But they just sent e-mails after two hours and didn't take more actions. Moreover, police also were unheeding and didn't take any actions to stop this tagedy because they did't think about possible danger. It is just unexcusable!
Even just week passed after this horrible event, students are runnig back to university. They want to stay there and don't scared about their lives. For me it is something uncanny...
So, everything sum up, i think that US government should have take actions for gun control in order to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Choosing a Student Exchange Program to Come to the US

My first opinion about this exchange program wasn't very good. It was negative maybe because it was a new thing for me... But now when i'm studying and my knowlege is wider about this i can say that from one side it is very good opportunity to see and visit new places, to know more about US life and culture. In my opinion, this exchange program is a great opportunity for brave and extreme youth who want to visit new places and get experience. But, on the other hand, it is risky choice because you never know what expected you there.
I think that ASSE program is better because in it students live with a family and attend school for a year. In my oppinion, it is safer and better choice for those who go there for the first time and are not very brave.
What would i do? I don't know... I would like to try Work and Travel exchange program because in it you not just study but also work and can earn some money. But it would be a bit scary to go so far alone. If one or more of my friends go with me so it wouldn't be any problems and i absolutely go to US.
To use this opportunity or not, i think, depends on each of us. One of us like to hazard and others not, so in this new world we just have to choose.

Employment Law

Summary

The history of the employment law begins in the 19th century.
Through the industrialization a lot of workers began to inter-organize. In order to this, government started legislate rights and restrictions for workers. Later were developed sickness, unemployment and retirement insurances. In 20th century there were passed more legislations in work area, such as guarantied minimum wage, women and men discrimination and others.
There are big differences between employees and self-employed people because employees have more legal rights than self-employed. However, there are passed a lot of acts to protect all workers from sex and raise discrimination. In addition to this, there are EC law which sometimes gives better protection than English law. In EC law now are discussing about steady minimum wage, about days in which trading should not be allowed and about different rights to strike in different countries.
Japan employment law has some differences from Western countries employment law. In this country there are fewer rights to workers but more guaranties from employers.
To sum up, all countries have employment laws and in most of them it is different but what is important that despite it’s differences employment law protects workers rights.
